Pokémon GO fans have finished data-mining the latest version of the game and have discovered something rather significant, which is meant to debut in an upcoming patch. First discovered on AeonLucid’s PogoProtos, it’s being called the new “Buddy System,” and it allows trainers to choose a specific Pokémon and “bond” with it by walking around with you on screen.
The game will use the same distance calculation as egg hatching. By choosing one particular Pokémon and deeming it your “Buddy” and walking it around, you will be awarded with candy for that particular Pokémon. The code suggests there will be four different ways for the game to display your Poké-pal – medium-sized, big-sized, flying around and on the trainer’s shoulder.
It’s worth noting you can only walk one Pokémon at a time, however you can walk them multiple times throughout the day. There will be a daily limit on how much candy you can get for walking Pokémon. This is useful not only for powering up and evolving your rare and favorite Pokémon, but for level grinding as well.
In the past month, interest in Pokémon GO has been fading. However, this new patch will address several big issues players have been complaining about.
Helps Trainers attain XP faster
As I mentioned earlier, this patch will be huge for level grinding. By focusing on the 12 Candy evolutions like Pidgey, Weedle, and Caterpie, players will be able to bang out 500 experience in no time. This would be in addition to catching these nearby common Pokémon and essentially doubling your efficiency. It has yet to be determined how fast you earn candy for walking but the theory is this would be a great way to reduce those giant post-level 20 XP walls.
Mitigating Frustrating Randomness
We all have that favorite Pokémon who happens to spawn cities and states away from where we live. Right now, in order to level them up, you have to rely on luck. You have to be lucky and stumble upon a nest or you have to be lucky with the “egg lottery” and hopefully out of the 142 released Pokémon , you hatch the one you’re looking for (damn you rattata!!).
Now with the Buddy system, you will be able to specifically choose which Pokémon you would like to train and get candy for. It may be a slow process but it beats waiting weeks to hatch/find more of the same rare Pokémon that took you weeks to get in the first place. Now finally, I have a way to get my Alakazam!
It makes catching them all – almost possible
Perhaps one of the biggest problems in Pokémon GO is the inability to ‘train’ your Pokémon. Pokémon hunting, egg hatching, and gym battling all fail for the most part to offer anything truly rewarding due to poor game mechanics and randomness. But with the new Pokémon Buddy System, you can essentially grind out any evolution or power level as long as you have at least one of the base Pokémon. This is exactly what Pokémon GO needs; a way to keep players engaged and working towards something that although tough, is actually achievable.
It further concretes to core concept of Pokémon GO – walking
Many Pokémon GO Trainers have found themselves going out less and less due to the fact they have “farmed out” their local spawn areas and egg hatching is just to frustrating. By introducing the “Buddy System”, egg hatching suddenly becomes more enticing. Instead of playing the egg lottery, trainers will be working towards powering up/evolving their choice Pokémon GO in addition to playing the egg lottery. This is huge because going for a Poké-walk will never feel like a waste of time again.
You get to Bond with your favorite Pokémon
One thing lacking from Pokémon GO is the connection between you, the trainer and your favorite Pokémon. Sure you can nickname them and your high CP Vaporeon is known around town as the local gym owner but what about the Pokémon you want to win with? A solid amount of the fan base who has played Pokémon GO are those who played the original Pokémon games when they first came out. That being said, it is safe to say those players had a favorite Pokémon who they carried through thick and thin throughout the game. The “Buddy System” addresses this issue, makes it so you can ‘train’ your Pokémon and deepen the connection between trainer, and Pokémon.
A release date has yet to be set for this upcoming patch, but it is very highly anticipated. This “Buddy System” is exactly what the game needs to stop the game from hemorrhaging players. It may not cause a massive resurgence but it’s a step in the right direction. With that I’ll leave you with my favorite quote from Pokémon:
That is only the perception of people
Truly skilled trainers should try to win with their favorites.”
